When Does a Pet Need Emergency Veterinary Care?

Emergency veterinary care may be needed when a pet is experiencing a serious accident, sudden illness, or severe symptoms. If you are unsure whether your pet’s condition is an emergency, it is always best to seek guidance right away.

Your pet may need emergency care for concerns such as:

  • Exposure to toxins or unsafe foods
  • Post-surgical complications
  • Breathing difficulties

Preparing Your Pet for Emergency Care

Pets who are frightened or in pain may react differently than usual. Approach your pet calmly and carefully, speaking gently and avoiding sudden movements. If you suspect a spinal injury, try to limit movement and support your pet’s back and neck as much as possible.

If your pet is bleeding heavily, apply gentle pressure to the wound if you can do so safely while getting to emergency care. If your pet is choking or struggling to breathe, seek emergency veterinary help immediately.
